For importers, this is the final leg after customs clearance, when goods still need to reach a warehouse, distribution centre, or customer address.

Transport Services We Coordinate
- Wharf cartage: Collection of full container loads (FCL) from port terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle, Adelaide, and Darwin. We coordinate with port authorities, stevedores, and container parks to ensure timely wharf collection before demurrage and detention fees apply.
- LCL / CFS cartage: Collection of less-than-container-load cargo from container freight stations after deconsolidation. We track CFS availability and arrange pickup as soon as your cargo is accessible.
- Airport cartage: Collection of air freight from airport cargo terminals, including direct delivery to your premises or onward consolidation with road freight.
- Road freight — metro and regional: Delivery to addresses across all major Australian cities and regional areas. We work with a network of road freight carriers selected for reliability and coverage.
- Refrigerated transport: Temperature-controlled cartage for perishable goods, pharmaceutical products, and reefer container deliveries where the cold chain must be maintained from port to destination.
- Oversized and out-of-gauge transport: Specialised transport arrangements for machinery, industrial equipment, and out-of-gauge cargo requiring pilot vehicles, permits, or low-loaders.
- Container unpacking (devanning): Coordination of container unstuffing at your premises or a third-party warehouse, including crane and forklift arrangements where required.
Why Transport Coordination Matters
Delays between customs clearance and cargo collection are one of the biggest hidden costs in importing. Container terminals charge port demurrage when an FCL container is not picked up within the free period (typically 3 business days after vessel discharge). Airlines and cargo handlers charge storage fees when air freight is not collected within 24 hours of arrival check-in. These charges accumulate rapidly and can reach thousands of dollars for a single shipment.

Demurrage and Detention — What You Need to Know
- Demurrage: A daily charge applied by the shipping line when a full container is not collected from the port terminal within the free time period. Free time is typically 3 days, after which charges of $150–$400+ per day per container apply.
- Detention: A daily charge applied by the shipping line when an empty container is not returned to the container park within the allowed free period after unpacking. Detention periods and rates vary by shipping line.
- Storage: Container parks and freight stations charge storage when containers or cargo sit on their premises after the free period expires.

Common Questions About Transport and Logistics
Once your export declaration is lodged and any required permits are in hand, sea freight transit times range from around 2 weeks (New Zealand, Pacific Islands) to 5-6 weeks (Europe, North America), depending on the destination and whether transhipment is required. Air freight typically takes 2-7 days transit. Add time upfront for pre-shipment planning, documentation, and any permit or certificate approvals before your cargo can be booked.
Errors in export documentation — wrong HS codes, missing certificates, or undervalued goods — can trigger delays, penalties, or rejected shipments at the destination port. Misclassification is particularly costly because it can cause inspections and damage your relationship with your overseas buyer. A licensed customs broker checks your commercial invoice, packing list, and certificates before your cargo ships to catch these issues early.
A Certificate of Origin isn’t mandatory for every export, but it’s required when your buyer wants to claim preferential tariff rates under a Free Trade Agreement — such as ChAFTA, AUSFTA, or CPTPP. Without it, your buyer may pay full duty at destination instead of a reduced FTA rate, which can affect the commercial terms of the sale. Your freight forwarder can confirm whether your destination market and product qualify.
FOB (Free on Board) is the most common choice for Australian exporters selling by sea freight — you control export clearance and hand over risk once goods are loaded, while your buyer arranges the main freight leg. EXW gives your buyer full control but leaves you exposed if they mishandle export formalities. For air freight, FCA is the closer equivalent to FOB. Whichever term you use, name the exact place (e.g. FOB Sydney) in your sales contract and commercial invoice.
Most goods can be exported from Australia without a licence. However, certain categories require a permit before shipping, including controlled or dual-use items, some agricultural commodities, wildlife and heritage items, and goods subject to trade sanctions. Your customs broker can confirm whether your product needs a permit before you book freight.
The majority of imported goods will pay 10% GST, although there are some items such as Medical and foodstuffs which are exempt from GST on import.

Value of Taxable Importation (VOTI) is defined by the GST Legislation as the sum of:
